What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a medical condition characterized by extra fluid buildup in the body tissues, resulting in a blockage of the lymphatic system.

Treatment includes working with a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) for decongestive therapy to the lymphatic system, which includes a gentle massage to move excess fluid, with transition to compression garments and an at-home maintenance program.

Symptoms of lymphedema include feeling of tightness of heaviness; swelling in the legs, arms, or other parts of the body; ache or discomfort; and fibrosis, which means thickening or hardening of the skin.

Cancer related treatment and chronic venous insufficiency are two prominent causes of secondary lymphedema.
